ASSOCIAZIONE TAMPEP ONLUS
The Tampep association
(transnational aids/std prevention
among migrant prostitutes in Europe project) is a
small and particularly innovative organisation created out
of a network project with the International
Tampep Foundation. It promotes actions
and policies based on respect
for the rights of immigrants, including socially
discriminated and marginalised prostitutes, acknowledging
their choices and dignity.
Local actions
are designed to raise awareness in
society about immigration
and slavery, and to encourage
the social integration of immigrant women by setting
up an effective network to solve problems of integration
in the labour market.
A summary of the Tampep
association's activities:
- street unit (uds): the uds
makes initial contact with women in the streets;
- damage-prevention activities,
counselling and std/aids
prevention: particular importance is given to correct
use of condoms and vaginal lubricants, to the means of transmission
of hiv and other sexually transmitted diseases;
- drafting and production
of information material in
various languages;
- health education and care:
access to local health services and to information on rights
in the fields of health, privacy and maternity;
- networking: over the years,
Tampep has built up what has become a consolidated network
involving the institutions (police headquarters, prosecutor's
office, municipality, tribunal, trade unions, etc.) and
others (associations, ngos), carrying out its operations
by means of three important work
forums: the justice forum,
coordination of lay and catholic
volunteer services, municipal
coordination on violence against women.
- in the health field,
it has cooperated for years with doctors in the Amedeo
di Savoia hospital and with staff in the isi bureaux
and family advisory bureaux;
- circulation of information
on opportunities provided for by law 40/98 (art.
18) and legal assistance;
- reception in emergency situations;
- first contact: the initial
phase (from two to six months) during which the woman enters
a community or residential complex while waiting for her
position to be made official and the objectives of her integration
to be established;
- vocational guidance and work induction:
career education seminars for skills assessment and understanding
the labour world;
- psychological assistance:
in order to develop self-assurance, self-awareness and self-esteem
in women, seminars have been organised, as have self-help
groups, social theatre courses and set interviews with operators.
